2 slices of bread (made
from ingredients that include whole or kibbled
grains, wholemeal or stone ground flour, or rye
flour)
1 cup of cooked brown
rice or wholemeal pasta
1 cup of cooked porridge
1 1/3 cups flaked
breakfast cereal (wholegrain or high fibre)
* Wholegrain foods contain
all the components of the grain (endosperm, bran and
germ). There is currently no standard definition for
a 'wholegrain' food in Australia but a number of
scientific studies define a wholegrain food as
containing 25% or more wholegrain content or bran by
weight.
The diabetes epidemic
1 in 4 Australians has or
is at risk of diabetes. The rate has doubled in
the past 20 years. Costs $1.2 billion annually.1
80% of all diabetes can
be prevented or delayed.1
The risk of developing
diabetes rises continuously with increasing
obesity. In Australia 67% of males and 52% of
females are overweight or obese. Child obesity
has trebled in the past 10 years. 20% of boys
and 22% of girls are overweight or obese.1
Diabetes is the second
most common cause for commencing renal dialysis;
the most common cause of blindness in people
under 60; the most common cause of non-traumatic
lower limb amputation and one of the most common
chronic diseases in children2.
